“Sgt. Alvin C. York, A Soldier’s Tale of WW1 and Personal Battles on the Home Front”
Performance
Alvin C. York was an enigma; a conscientious objector and Congressional Medal of Honor winner. He single handedly captured over 130 German prisoners and marched them to his command post, encountering the enemy all along the way. He was hailed a great hero, but in truth, he was just a young mountain man on the threshold of his religious awakening when America entered WW1 and he was called upon to serve his country. Listen, as his mother relates his tale of youthful strife and personal religious struggle from his home in the hills of Pall Mall, Tenn. You’ll hear the simple words of Mary York as she remains steadfast in her loyalty to her 11 children and the religious ethics which guide both she and her son through the terrors of war. A worldlier Alvin returns home a war hero, but his fight for Tennessee backwoods children’s education will be a much longer and harder fight. A WW1 memorabilia display is included.
