Syllabus of Study
Essential Question: What is the purpose of color in art?
Course Description: Color theory students will explore the possibilities of pigments in several media. Practices of color blending and creation of form through color will be studied. Projects using liquid and dry media will be studied. Students will also keep a sketch journal using color as an element of daily practice.
Course Goals: Instill within the student the ability to discern the differences in pigmentation from medium to medium as it applies to color.
VAD 1 (9-12) –2 Students demonstrate knowledge and skill of media, tools, techniques, and processes of Visual Art and Design
Essential Skills:
· Learn and apply basic color theory for pigment
· Utilize multiple mediums
VAD 1 (9-12) – 2 a. selecting and evaluating a variety of media, tools, techniques, and processes in creating two- and three- dimensional works of art and design
· Develop understanding of stylistic experimentation
VAD3 (9-12) –1 Students demonstrate the ability to communicate in the language of Visual Art and Design b. creating a unique solution for a visual art or design problem
· Reinforce critiquing skills
VAD 1 (9-12) – 2 b. demonstrating knowledge of vocabulary of media, techniques, and processes
VAD4 (9-12) –1 Students reflect upon, analyze and evaluate the work of self and other e. contributing in individual or group discussions about work in which the student gives and receives constructive criticism
· Reflect upon one’s own work using prior knowledge and knowledge gained from the lesson and critique
VAD4 (9-12) Ext –1 Students reflect upon, analyze and evaluate the work of self and others f. presenting an evaluation of one’s own work for creativity, quality of craftsmanship, effective use of visual arts and design concepts, and choice of subject matter based on the research and analysis of exemplar works of art or design
Student Learning Objective: Students will gain a further understanding of the application of color and visual design (composition) using color
Materials Required:
Provided in class:
Water color paints
Colored Inks
Acrylic Paints
Oil Pastels
Paper and canvases
Students should bring to class:
Any of the above they wish to use if they prefer thier own
-Pencils
-Colored Pencils (Prismacolor prefered, but any art brand will do)
-Sketchbook (size and quality of student's choice but should be hard or spiral bound for experimentation purposes, Canson XL [mix media] 8" x 10" minimum)
-Ruler (12")
-Erasers (Kneaded or White Vinyl)
-Brushes (variety pack)
-Portfolio for carrying up to 18" x 24" work
At home – Elements to use for color (any or all of the materials listed)
Colored pencils
Pastels (oil or chalk)
Markers
Paint (water based)
Beacon’s standard grading weights are:
45% Projects / Papers/Tests
35% In-Class work/Participation and Attendance
20% Homework

In-Class
In-Class grading is defined by activities done in class such as sketch work and technique trials.
Homework
A sketch journal will be kept by each student. This will be checked on Thursdays for a homework grade. The subject matter of the sketch journal is creating observational depictions in color. Medium and subject matter is the student artist’s choice unless otherwise assigned by the instructor. Emphasis should be made on experimentation with materials and technique.
Tests - Individual Finished Artworks
Individual Finished Artworks can be submitted any Thursday. All work completed at home and handed in are counted as tests. The more grades a student has, the more he/she has to grade from. (i.e. a student has the possibility of 20 individual project grades. A student should strive for four pieces – about one every four or five weeks)
This process is for the students’ growth of his/her own style as an artist and SHOULD BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY.
Participation
Participation is daily work ethic and effort. Students are expected to work in class for the entire period. An average of these daily grades will be calculated at the end of each week based on the following format – 0 = non participatory, 1 = average effort, 2 = full effort, Exempt = excused absence (see student handbook for definition). The tally of the scores will be multiplied by 10 for a final score; ex. if a student is not participating for three days out of five, his/her score would be 4. The final score would then be 40 out of a possible 100.
Late Work Policy: No late work will be excepted at full value without special arrangements made with the instructor and Mrs. Murphy. Any work handed in late will have 10 points removed per class day late. Work may only be handed in at the beginning of the class period on the due date unless otherwise allowed by the instructor. Work handed in after the collection period will be considered late and the above perimeters apply.
Course Requirements:
· Student Artists are expected and required to complete all projects in the manner described within the class schedule.
· Student Artists will respect the space, fellow student artists and themselves as described in the student handbook.
· Student Artists will work on art at all times within the arts classroom.
