OPTION 2 - Advocacy for Arts (theatre) education
for your senior project

Senior Project 2018/2019

Enduring Understanding: Theatre is a vital component to our democracy. Theatre education, however, as you know is not common in our schools. States such as Texas have a mandate to have theatre education in every high school in the state. Working within the political system of Rhode Island, you will try and advocate for theatre education while you, yourself practice theatre education in connection with the Gamm's program at Founder's academy. 

​Essential Questions: What has theatre education done for you? How would you go about spreading the ability for more students to experience theatre education? What steps would you take on the Rhode Island State level to advocate for theatre education in our schools?

Students will learn -

Students will be able to -
1. Generate and carry through with advocacy efforts in regard to theatre education.
2. Research political facts and utilize them.
3. Communicate effectively with members of public office.
4. Create materials essential to spreading a message to members of congress. 


Activities:
1. Research the policies that are currently in place in Rhode Island.
  A. Rhode Island Department of Education
​  B. Rhode Island State Council for the Arts
  C. Higher education policies in RI (and offerings)
  D. State laws on arts education in our schools

2. Develop a plan on how to start student advocacy on a grassroots level.

​3. Create materials to spread to other students around the state that will aid in advocacy efforts for Theatre Education. 
   A. Brochures
   B. Petitions
   C. Slide shows
   D. Social Media 

4. Enact your plan


Assessments -
      1. Grade on progress reports and research - (Homework)
      2. Grades materials and effect of distribution.
