THE monologue

Content Standards:

TH:Pr5.1.HSI
a.     Practice various acting techniques to expand skills in a rehearsal or drama/theatre performance.
TH:Pr6.1.HSI
a.     Perform a scripted drama/theatre work for a specific audience.

Essential Questions: How do you think you could memorize a play? What would it take to help you memorize the words to a monologue? What do you feel is your level of persistence and tenacity? What is my best way to memorize?

Enduring Understanding: I cannot tell you how many times I have had a student proclaim, “I can’t memorize all of this!” In this lesson, We’ll learn to memorize a monologue and perform it for the class. Using tools and techniques that may work for some and not for others as well as trying a few different methods of packing lines into our heads.

Students will know:
  • New techniques to memorize material.
  • In what context memorization works best for them.
  • How to apply play reading skills to memorization.
Students will be able to:
  • Memorize an perform (not recite) a monologue of at least a minute length.
Assessments:
  1. Memorization of a monologue chosen during the last unit.
  2. Performance of said monologue.
  3. Class participation in critique

Activities for ALL students:

Activity 1:    Re-read your chosen monologue and the play from which it comes.
Activity 2:     Learn various techniques for memorization.
Read and reread your materials (monologue) to yourself is the he most basic type of memorization
Read your materials aloud - this helps you learn it two ways, visual as you read and auditory as you hear your own voice.
Read your materials aloud AND record it. Use a voice memo app on a smartphone, or any other recording device.
Make yourself a quiz on an online quizzing app like "Quizlet"
Once it is partially memorized try to perform it for yourself fin a mirror.
Activity 3:     In pairs try to use the techniques given. Study and attempt to memorize lines with a partner.
If online, videotape yourself doing the monologue and send it to a friend for a critique or perform to each other on a live chat!
Activity 4:     Memorize the monologue overnight and perform at the next class meeting or online class meeting via a conferencing app revealing what technique worked best for you.
Activity 5:    Reflect on your performance using the rubric and graphic organizer attached.
