Essential Questions: What is a sketch? How do you observe the world? Why do artists catalog the world with sketches? How many different ways are there to sketch? Is a sketch art?

Understanding: Artwork is like a science project. One does not just jump into an experiment without the proper process and theories. Art is just the same. Artists go through many planning stages in order to get to the final product. Artists also experiment many times before trying the final formulas that may make a work of art. Sketching is our process of trial and error, our process of gathering information and data before we come to a conclusion. It should be thoughts expressed in order to get to the goal of a final work, eventually.

Students will know:

·       The need to investigate our world

·       The use of different types of observational skills

·       Trial of many different media

·       The use of the sketch book as a cataloging tool for artistic experimentation

Students will be able to:

·       Determine the difference between a sketch and a finished work

·       Understand several types of sketching practices

·       Work with color and black and white media

·       Discover observational techniques

·       Define terminology such as composition, tone, layers, value, mark, stroke, negative and positive space
