Risky Business

To try and understand art an artist must risk learning who they truly are. - JRL

E-Zine
Project Description: There are risks all around us in everyday life. When you are faced with a risk, you have a choice to take or avoid that risk. In our lives we take small risks every day, walking into a building we've never been to before, meeting someone new, trying new foods, etc. We also face large risks. In art making there are calculated risks.  We will investigate what risks you take in your life and art. We will also look at an artist who has taken calculated risks.

Discussion Questions: What is a risk? What small risks did you face today? What large risks did you face this week? Did you avoid or accept the risks? How? What is the greatest risk you've ever taken? What were the consequences?

Activity 1: Get together with a partner for this activity. Using role playing, you will partner with a friend and ask them the questions listed above as if you were interviewing them for a documentary. In this documentary, you are cataloging the life of the artist in front of you. His/her life has been defined by the risks taken. Ask them where they want to be in five years. Take all of this down in writing. Using the information you have gathered about the artist, create a story of that artist's life in the form of a magazine article.
Activity 2: The magazine article needs to be accompanied by a graphic/piece of artwork by the artist. After you write your article, give it to the person it is written about. That person must now generate a work of art based on the story you have made. They may use any media they wish so long as the image is able to be scanned and is within an 8" x 10" piece of heavy paper. Note: Preliminary sketches should be made and be documented.
Activity 3: The artist will then take the art work, scan it, and create a page layout digitally using Microsoft Publisher or a similar program and saved as a PDF or JPEG file. The digital files will be emailed to Mr. LeClair. Once all of the files are received, the instructor will create an online magazine of your art and stories. The button at the top of this page will link to it once the magazine is finished.

Bridge Activity: Watch the video and investigate the work of  Japanese Avant Garde artist Takashi Murakami (see buttons below). Write a short one paragraph reflection as a comment in the Discussion Blog attached to this page answering the following questions: What is the risk he speaks of in the video? How is he like you? How is he different? What steps has he taken to make his risk work?
